God has given us the great commandment, to love God and love people (Matt 22:36-40) and the great commission, to go into all the world and preach the good news to all nations (Matt 28:19-20). Added to that, a specific word we have felt God say to us as a church is to be a LARGE, MULTICULTURAL, FAMILY. Everything we do is filtered through those 3 words. We believe God has placed us here in Melbourne to be a faith-filled, loving community of people who take the good news of the gospel into this wonderful city and beyond.
Speaks to us of numerical growth as well as a largeness in what we do. We don’t exist exclusively for ourselves, rather we exist for the benefit of others. We see a bigger picture, a city that needs saving, broken families that need healing, people that need love. We also see a nation to advance the Kingdom of God into and the nations of the world. The mandate Jesus gave the church was to go into all the world and advance The Kingdom. Another area of largeness is our desire that each individual grows in their knowledge of God and maturity. You may notice that we do a fair bit of preaching through books of the bible. This is because we want to be a people with a strong biblical understanding of God’s Word.
Speaks to us of inclusivity. We welcome people from any social background and we are reaching out to people from any nationality. We want to be relevant to all ages and all cultural backgrounds. Currently we have many different cultures in the church including people from more than 20 different nationalities, including people from Australia, NZ, Fiji, Samoa, South Korea, Greece, Italy, Hungary, South Africa, El Salvador, Chilli, Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland, China, Thailand, Sudan, Sri Lanka and India and many more. Our heart is to see a truly multicultural family working together to serve God here in Melbourne.
This speaks to us of our love for one another. Although we are reaching out to our city we also want every person in New Gen to feel a part of the family. We want to grow in our relationships with one another and have fun together. There are many groups that you can join to meet new people. If you’re over fifty there’s the TOFS (The Over Fifties), if you’re into gardening or books theres the book club or the gardening group. The men meet on the 3rd saturday of each month for SHED. The ladies meet every 2nd week for GANG (Girls At New Gen). There are also connect groups which meet in homes on a wednesday night and a youth group on a Saturday night for 12-18yr olds. We encourage you to get involved and grow and serve with us.
Ultimately our highest desire is to do the things God has planned for us to do. Nothing more and nothing less…
